The Twa Dogs A work of humour and biting satire. Caesar, a Newfoundlander and dog of the landed gentry, and a farmer's collie, Luath (named after Burns' own dog) meet of an evening to discuss the ways of the world.

The poem is a class-ridden tale of snobbery and subservience and reveals much of the gap between the rich of Burns' day and the labourers on the same lands. The two dogs, thankfully free from all such trappings, lament the inequality of man, long into the summer evening.
When up they gat and shook their lugs,
Rejoic'd they were na men, but dogs
And each took off his several way,
Resolv'd to meet some ither day.
