Gavin Hamilton Hauled before the 'Auld Licht' kirk minister, the Reverend William 'Daddy' Auld, Hamilton was accused of riding his horse over the countryside on a Sabbath (Sunday).

Additionally, he was accused of picking potatoes on the Sunday. Rebuked by Reverend Auld, Hamilton appealed to the Presbytery of Ayr and was defended by his friend Robert Aitken, an Ayrshire Lawyer. He was acquitted, much to the dismay of his accuser, Willie Fisher whose bitter prayers were thus imagined by Burns.
Lord, mind Gavin Hamilton's deserts
He drinks, and swears, and plays at cartes
Yet has sae monie takin arts,
Wi great and sma'
Frae God's ain Priest the people's hearts,
He steals awa'!

Holy Willie's Prayer
(January, 1785)
