The universal song of friendship, 'Auld Lang Syne' ('Old Long Ago' or, by interpretation, 'Old Times Gone') is sung in every language in the world and signifies the parting of friends.
One verse in particular is possibly the best known piece of rhyme in the world.Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot And auld lang syne. The song is based on the parting of two friends who may never see each other again. This confirms it as a song to be sung with pathos, unlike the more raucous rendering given so often at the end of an evening's festivities.
We twa hae run aboot the braes An pou'd the gowans fine; But we've wander'd mony a weary fit; Sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl'd in the burn Frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin auld lang syne.
