Robert Aitken Good friend and supporter of Burns, Robert Aitken was a well-respected and most accomplished lawyer who successfully defended his and Burns' friend, Gavin Hamilton who was brought to task by the 'Auld Licht' church in Mauchline.

This success infuriated those who wanted to see Hamilton pilloried, especially one William Fisher, elder of the kirk and one of his accusers. His extreme discomfort at being challenged by Aitken during the hearing is reflected in 'Holy Willie's Prayer'.
O Lord my God, that glib-tongu'd Aitken,
my very heart and flesh wis quakin,
Tae think how we stood, sweatin' shakin',
and p****d wi' dread,
While Auld , wi' hingin' lip'
Gaed sneakin' an' hid his head.
