William Lamberton, Bishop of St. Andrews, Primate Lamberton was Bruce's great friend and constant adviser, for which he suffered sorely. He became a hunted fugitive and although captured by the English, he managed to escape and continued to bring Bruce aid from Holy Church - funds and much else towards the struggle for independence.

He never failed his younger friend, indeed, it was he who observed the crucial moment in battle where the Scots, greatly outnumbered, were beginning to flag. It was at that point he decided to take a hand and, leaving the safety of the Torwood where he waited with the Scots baggage train, he led the charge of the 'small folk' - women, old men and others who had been injured or otherwise excluded from the fighting -armed with sticks, kitchen knives, meat cleavers, indeed, anything they could lay their hands on - to the aid of the flagging Scots. It was that crucial intervention which finally turned the battle. From a distance, the English mistook them for a fresh army, and the sheets and blankets they had tied to poles to be banners and flags. In that moment, the Battle of Bannockburn was won.
For this and the strength he gave the all too often solitary Bruce through the long desperate years of campaigning, his contribution to Scotland's cause cannot be over-estimated.
