Cambuskenneth Abbey

Rook
Bannockburn Scottish (Light) Side
Available only with complete set

Cambuskenneth Abbey After the battle, Bruce repaired immediately to this Augustinian Abbey which is set within a loop of the meanderings of the River Forth, not far from Bannockburn. The abbey became the scene of the surrender for many English lords and some of the greatest knights in Christendom.

It was a triumphant but poignant moment when the hero-king received the swords and obeisance of so many of his proud but lifelong enemies. The eventual ransoms of these gained the release of his Queen, his daughter Marjory, his sister, the Countess of Buchan who had placed the crown on his head, and many others of his captive supporters.
It was also where the great who had fallen were brought and where Bruce received, with some emotion, the body of Clifford - one of his fiercest and most despised enemies throughout the long struggle against the English. The tower of Cambuskenneth remains today as depicted in this chess piece.
