Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham

Bishop
Bannockburn English (Dark) Side
Available only with complete set

Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham A warlike, militant and harsh cleric who had acted as Edward lst's envoy in Scotland, Bek became a very active campaigner in the subsequent wars against Scotland. Noted for his savagery even in such savage times, and acting more like an independent prince than a prelate, he actually led his own army.

He took the strong East Lothian castles of Tantallon and Dirleton, the latter the last stronghold to hold out, and he commanded the right wing at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. He was very much Edward's confidante and responsible for many of the less savoury aspects of his reign.
