Lanercost Priory

Bannockburn English (Dark) Side

Lanercost Priory Sited near Carlisle and dating from 1169, this ungainly building was home to an Augustinian foundation. Edward l stopped at Lanercost in 1307, on his way to one more invasion campaign against Scotland. But the king was already in ill health and, during his stay, became seriously ill.

Recognising that death was upon him, he ordered this bed to be carried from the priory onto the Solway shore, from where he could see Scotland and curse her. He gave his last commands there to his son, the Prince of Wales: to have his dead body boiled in oil and his bones to be carried in a casket, at the head of his army - to be laid to rest only when the cursed Scottish nation was crushed and smashed for all time.
Edward the Second gave him that promise but when his father expired, the new king returned home with the body and had his father buried in Westminster Abbey, in peace!
