We do not often turn out in great numbers for new kitchen implements or utensils unless they get a heap of praise from more than one or two quarters.   There are exceptions to this of course and these items have gone on to make their marque, at least for a short time.  Take  the toastie maker – at one time this was number one of veryone’s Christmas wish list.  The simplicity of preparing a favourite snack was such an alluring feature.  A couple of decades later, I’m not sure I know anyone who uses one at home themselves, but they flock to the toastie section of a snack menu when we are out.  I remember too the excitement over the cordless vacuum cleaners – these revolutionary units were designed to allow us to plug them in at the socket to charge them up and then do a whole house sized clean up on one charge.  Everyone wanted the latest design.  There were two that cornered the market and they do still advertise, but the over the top saturation advetising has ceased.  I always ask colleagues whether they use their rechargeable cleaner all the time and because they do have limitations of power and pick up, the convenience of no cables seems to be less important than needing a proper clean up machine.   Most folk agree that they have their place – when a quick clean up is needed, a sharp burst with the rechargeable is better than laboriously sweeping with dust pan & brush.
