We all need a good supply of homewares once we have made that first step away from the home of mum and dad. It can be so daunting when you take those tentative steps towards independence and a satisfactory life away from ‘home’. Firstly finding an affordable pad is difficult – unless you are in the happy situation of having a relative or pal who just happens to have a suitable flat for you to rent. You scour the newspaper classified ads or look online for suitable places; in the old days, a post card in the window of the local post office or corner store would have been the answer.
Having looked it over, agreed rent and terms with the landlord, paid the deposit . . all you then have to do is go and furnish it. Most new or first time renters will have to rely on what the local charity outlet can supply. Or again, check whether any relative is about to do up their own house and see if you can acqure their cast offs. Once the main large items are sorted, bed; storage; sofa & chairs; tables etc, then all the soft furnishings and linens come into the equation. It is lovely to be able to buy all matching in a theme but very often funds dictate that a second hand or ‘pre-loved’ approach may well be needed. However, even if you have to accept second hand items, it is possible to mix and match these and get new toning items that show them at their best.
